question for the more experienced

Permalink Closed

So... for those of you who are more "professional" artists, I got a quest for advice and tips to try to better myself. Right now I am playing around with a different style of art. But for the most part, any advice for drawing say normal humans?

Certain body parts, making porportions correct, making things not look crappy, etc etc. And please don't just do the "practice" part. I need the advice to know how to practice and get better. Nothing bothers me more than people who just say what is wrong, or what they think could use a little work and then they don't advise on what would make it better.

Example of what I mean, someone says "You need to fix the porportion of head to body". Well, does that mean make the head bigger or smaller? Or should the body be bigger or smaller? Or might it just be a persective thing?

You know what I mean now?

May post my art stuff in the near future.

Why thank you. I've been a little more artsy than normal recently. But my recent works are not on the computer yet

Well, the honest truth is that you do have to practice, but unless you use references, you're just going to keep practicing the same mediocre image over and over again. Don't look at other people's art until you look at photos first. Use lots and lots and lots of photos. You need to find tutorials by artists who are good at realism. Honestly, if you want to get better, don't use anime or manga tutorials. It's like Otacon said, manga is "realistic" not "realism." I also have tutorials on my deviantArt account under the name SomniumAngel. You can go look them up.

As for the head thing, the adult human body is (on average) seven heads tall. So take a look at your drawings and figure out the ratio you are using.

If you post some of your work here you could get more specific critiques. Do you have a deviantart or anything?
