Jim sat in his cube and stared at the computer screen, looking at the time - 12:37PM. He had almost made it halfway through the day and couldn’t wait 'til 5:00PM. With some effort, he pushed himself away from the desk and struggled to stand. He was due last Tuesday but with the ok from the HR department had continued to work as he wanted to take his paternity leave as late as possible in order to save on day care.
Jim waddled his way to the bathroom and sat down on the toilet. He sighed with satisfaction as some of the pressure he was feeling as of late was relieved. With the baby in position to be born any time now, there was a heaviness to Jim's belly that he hadn’t felt before. As he looked at the ball sitting in his lap, he hoped that tonight would be the night. He liked being pregnant but enough was enough.
The pregnancy was definitely more taxing on his body as of late. Being 37 years old though it was somewhat to be expected. As Jim made his way back to his desk, his hand made its way to its familiar spot on the arch of his back as the other rubbed circles over the aching skin that stretched tightly over his son.
As he rubbed himself, trying to calm the still nameless boy he carried within, he reminded himself he needed to stay focused on his work, a task that was becoming harder to do now. He didn’t remember feeling so out of it towards the end of his last pregnancy, but that was 19 years ago.
Jim had twins when he was just 18 after a one night stand. The girls were now away at college and he missed having them at home so he decided to have another child, opting for artificial insemination. Since he was in such good shape before getting pregnant, Jim's doctor was comfortable with him getting pregnant again although he on the older side, but did mention to Jim that labor and delivery could be more difficult this time around. So far though everything was going by the book, aside from being 4 days late.
The baby was in fact quite large at last check, weighing in at a very healthy 10.5 lbs. Over the course of the pregnancy, Jim had gained close to 60 lbs, nearly as much as he had when he was pregnant with the girls. His doctor told him this was because his metabolism wasn't as fast as it was when he was 18 and not to be concerned about the weight gain.
Over the last few days as the baby dropped into position to be born, Jim noticed a change to his belly: it now stuck out very far in front and hung quite low. His skin was constantly achy as it stretched to its limits to accommodate the baby and to Jim, often felt like it had no more give.
Jim had been relegated to eating small meals every couple hours or so as there wasn’t much room left in him for food, but he was always hungry due to the baby's continuing growth. Over the last week the strong kicks and punches had subsided as the baby ran out of room but he would still feel limbs sticking out here and there as the baby stretched and tried to rearrange himself. Today there was an elbow pushing out low in his belly, making a visible bump through the already tight sweater he was wearing.
When Jim got back to his desk, he had a missed call from his boss. He'd left a message which Jim checked after he got himself seated. Of course his boss needed Jim to bring down the report he was working on to his office 2 floors down, no way could he come up and get it himself... As he waddled once more down the hall, Jim thought for sure this guy must never have been pregnant.
Jim got to his boss' office and was about to walk in when he threw up a hand signaling Jim to stop and wait outside, where there were no chairs to rest. Jim stood there for 15 minutes waiting for his boss to signal him in. While waiting Jim massaged the left side of his belly in an effort to get his son's elbow to join the rest of his body. No luck, but at least the kid was quiet - no kicks or punches. Jim's back really started to ache and eventually a pain spread over his belly. Could this be? Sure enough, a slight contraction moved over his belly, contracting the orb ever so slightly. It was over before it started but it was definitely his first contraction. Jim looked down at the time on his watch, 1:15PM.
Finally his boss called him in and Jim brought the report over. His boss quickly scanned over the pages then proceeded to ask questions of Jim which forced him to lean over and point to different numbers on the report. As he leaned over, Jim's belly rested solidly on the desk, which was a nice relief to the weight on his back.
After the meeting, Jim was on the way back to his cube when Sharon, his best friend at the office stopped him. She commented that it didn’t look like he slept well last night. It was true; he was never able to find a comfortable position to sleep and was a little nervous about the impending birth. Sharon was very forward, and went ahead and touched his belly, telling him it was a lot harder than she remembered last time. Jim agreed and told her he had just had his first contraction, albeit a slight one. Sharon told him to try and get some rest tonight since there was no knowing now when Jim would go into labor and left him to waddle back to his cube.
5:00PM, quitting time. Jim lumbered to the door, and out to the city streets. He moved a lot slower than he had 9 months earlier. Despite his condition, people still bumped into and pushed past him of as they ran for their bus. Jim would have hurried too to avoid standing in line but obviously couldn't. When he got to the bus terminal, there was of course a line. So much for courtesy, he thought as he waited in line. No one offered him their place ahead of him.
When he finally got on the bus, he wondered how much longer he could deal with his commute. Working was one thing - at least there he had a comfortable desk and chair but the small seats on the bus left much of Jim's bloated body squished, crammed and bulging over. The tight seat forced Jim's back into a now awkward position due to his belly, and the padding on the seat left a lot to be desired.
When he finally made it to his stop, Jim was so happy. All he could think about was his couch and some pajama pants. He got let out at the entrance to his town home community and made the 2 block walk to his unit. He hurried, as fast as he could through the door and inside where he immediately took a seat on the bench by the door and removed his shoes, shirt and pants.
It was such a relief to get out of his binding work clothes. The swell and weight of his overdue stomach made his work shirts and pants all the tighter. The last week at work had really been uncomfortable and binding even as he obviously wore paternity clothes, the clothes he had were size L9M (Large 9 Months) but were now on the verge of being uncomfortably tight since he was overdue. In nothing but his underwear, he waddled into the laundry room where he pulled a pair of pajama pants out of the dryer, awkwardly put them on using the washer to balance himself and then went into the living room to sit on the couch.
Jim looked down at the baby in his lap. His belly was very round, with the exception of the elbow still poking out from the left side. He felt around his bare stomach for one of the last times, running his fingers over his belly button which had popped out a few days ago. Running his hands over the large, slightly hairy orb, he noticed how much harder it was than it had been even this morning, Sharon had been right. Right then he felt the whole sphere move, bulging out a bit. He looked at the clock on the wall, 6:15PM. It was only his second contraction of the day, coming 5 hours after his first so it was nothing to panic over but it was still progress. He could feel that his son wasn’t thrilled by the contraction as he squirmed around inside him as the muscle waves took place. Jim noted that the contraction only lasted about 30 seconds and felt more like a bad stomach cramp than anything else. Having experienced labor before, he knew he should enjoy these mild contractions while they lasted.
For the rest of the evening Jim spent some time walking around the house to help his labor progress. His first (and last) labor had gone rather quickly so he wanted to do all he could to make sure this one was the same.
The walking around helped. Around 9:30PM after experiencing several more mild contractions, Jim was waddling around the kitchen with a bowl of yogurt. He was trying to eat some food to keep up his energy level. Just as he put his bowl down in the sink, Jim was racked by the strongest contraction yet. With his prior contractions, Jim had been able to walk through them but this one was strong enough that he was forced to grab onto the sink to steady himself. His belly contorted and seemed to change from round to more oval shape. The contractions were now about 15 minutes apart and Jim could tell he was making progress as he felt the baby slowly move ever so slightly lower to make its eventual arrival. The contraction passed after about a minute and Jim took a deep breath, recovering after the tough contraction. He suddenly started feeling his age and wondered, at 37 could he handle labor?
Now that his labor was progressing, Jim gave himself permission to go upstairs and lay down, he thought he could get a few hours of sleep before he had to go to the hospital. Jim started up the stairs, and now gravity was really pulling on his back. He felt heavier and slower than ever as he climbed the seemingly endless stairs.
When he got to the bedroom, Jim lowered himself to a seated position and lay down on his side. He lay there with his hands on his belly hoping he would be able to be strong for the delivery.
For the next few hours, Jim drifted in and out of sleep, waking to the tightening of his abdomen every few minutes. Jim would look over at the red lights on his alarm clock and make note of the time between contractions. To his surprise, he was able to get a good amount of sleep until about 2:00AM. By this time, the contractions were 12 minutes apart and were starting to get much stronger, putting uncomfortable pressure on his belly.
Jim decided it to call a cab then since he didn't know how long it would take for one to show up in the middle of the night and he didn’t want to be stuck waiting. The cab company said it would only be about 25 minutes which he was glad to hear.
Jim hurried around his room getting ready to go. He changed into some large, comfy sweat pants and threw on a pull-over hoody, not bothering to put a shirt on underneath and got the bag he had put together for the hospital. He stopped once for a contraction which caused him to have to sit down. By this time, Jim was groaning though the pain, his breathing had become deeper and sweat started to form on his forehead.
A honking horn let Jim know his ride was here, and he struggled off the edge of the bed and down the stairs to get to the cab. He got in and breathed a sigh of relief. The cab driver didn’t question Jim at all; he just let him relax in the back. Jim’s relaxation was interrupted by several strong contractions; they were lasting over a minute now and were coming more frequently, creating a great deal of pressure on Jim’s middle. He wanted desperately for his water to break so his labor could move on beyond these still relatively mild contractions so he could start pushing and get his son out.
When Jim got to the hospital he walked in unassisted, there were no orderlies around to help him to check in. When Jim got to the check desk, he had to wait in line; there were 3 other guys in front of him waiting to be checked in to labor and delivery. Must be a full moon he thought. The other guys had wives or husbands with them, and Jim stood there alone. Still he was excited to complete this journey by himself although, he would have liked to have his girls there to help him, but they were away at school, which was very important to him.
Jim felt another contraction coming on and steadied himself against the desk, even with his deep moaning the receptionist was too busy to look up, though she did tell him she would be with him in a minute. When Jim finally got checked in, the receptionist directed him to be seated while they waited for a room to clear. According to her, right now they were over run with guys in various stages of labor, so they were having to do some juggling.
Jim waited for 10 minutes and finally was picked up and taken by wheelchair to his room. The orderly practically threw a gown at Jim before he set to rushing around the room, gathering supplies for Jim's IV and pulling sensors to place on Jimmy's belly out of a drawer. So much for customer service, Jim thought.
Once Jim had gotten into the gown, had his IV inserted and the sensors, applied, the orderly let him know that a doctor would be in shortly to check on him and left to prepare another man for delivery.
Jim lay down on the bed and looked around the room. He had hoped for a private room but was told at check in that they were all occupied. The room he was in was large and held a row of beds with curtains separating them. Some of the curtains were drawn and Jim could hear was the moaning and groaning of several other men in labor. The sounds of other men obviously in pain didn't do much to calm his nerves. He attention was brought to the monitor that was tracking his own progress and watched as the screen suddenly came to life with new data as a new contraction hit. Soon he joined the chorus of groaning that filled the room. Jim curled up on his side, hands around the bottom of his belly pulling it up, against the pressure that was pulling it down. He could feel the baby kicking him on the top of his belly, angry at the pressure.
15 minutes later a frazzled doctor came in. He introduced himself to Jim who was catching his breath from another contraction. The doctor reached under his gown to give Jim an internal exam. He then lifted up the gown and started feeling around Jim’s belly.
The doctor informed Jim that he was 6 CM dilated and the baby was making good progress heading for the birth canal. The doctor then told him that he would have a nurse come in soon to break his water which would help speed the labor up. Having his water broken was not quite what Jim wanted, he wanted a completely natural birth with little intervention, but after being in labor for over 12 hours, he was ready for some more substantial progress.
It took about 30 minutes for a nurse to finally come in. She apologized and let him know about the mad rush in the paternity ward. Right now they had 15 guys, and only 5 doctors, so they were a little busy to say the least.
The nurse pulled up Jim’s gown to reveal his belly. She felt around for a few moments and let Jim know that as soon as she broke his water, things would speed up. Jim only nodded as another contraction hit, making him focus all his attention on breathing through it.
The nurse spread his legs wide and helped Jim guide them into the stirrups at the foot of the bed. She pulled a hook from the table behind her and disappeared from Jim's view behind his belly between his legs. He felt an awkward sensation as she inserted the hook and within a few seconds Jim felt a rush of warm, sticky fluid stream from his opening.
As the nurse cleaned up the mess, Jim appreciated the temporary release of pressure from within. Now the only thing he had to do was wait as his muscles worked the baby down further into his canal.
45 minutes after having his water broken, Jim’s contractions were really speeding up and getting longer in length. All he could do to ease the pain breathe, moan and groan and wiggle his hips in an attempt to ease the baby down his canal.
To Jim, the sensation of the baby moving down slowly within him was like taking a large, continuous dump. He could feel his son moving what seemed like only millimeters at a time toward his opening but was glad he was moving nonetheless.
Each time a contraction started, he felt a tightening in his back first, then the undulations moving forward around his sides, seeming to meet at his belly button before moving down toward his hips. With each contraction, his stomach muscles were becoming more sore and burned with an overworked feeling as they slowly moved his son lower.
The baby was not happy and no longer remained relatively still inside. With each contraction, Jim also felt himself being battered from within as the baby kicked. Jim continued to groan along with the other laboring men in the room. Occasionally he would hear one yelling that they HAD to push, or the baby was coming.
For a moment between contractions, Jim was tempted to walk around but decided not to as he already felt exhausted at this point and he hadn't even started pushing yet.
He did see a few guys walking around in the hallway, and made eye contact with one of them. The guy smiled and waddled over. He had a slightly smaller frame than Jim so although his belly was about the same size, it looked absolutely massive attached to him. He introduced himself as Steve and between their contractions he and Jim made small talk.
Steve bent over the side of Jim's bed, pulling his gown tight with his low hanging belly, he told Jim that he was 32 and was having his second child, a girl who was expected to be between 10-11 lbs. Like Jim he was a single father and was also gay.
After a strong contraction, Steve announced he was going to return to his bed to lay down, but first he grabbed Jim's cell phone off the bedside table and input his information, telling Jim to call him later to get the kids together for a play date, if not something more he added with a wink. Jim promised he would as Steve seemed very nice and very cute even in the throws of heavy labor. He wished Steve luck as he waddled off and then focused his attention back on breathing through yet another intense contraction.
By 8:00AM, Jim was getting very close to delivery. While he was thinking about it, Jim reached for his phone and sent Sharon a text telling her he was in labor and asked her to let the appropriate people at the office know.
With the message sent, Jim was hit by the strong urge to push and had to use all his efforts to just breathe through the contraction and resist the urge. His hair was drenched with sweat and his gown clung to him. Through his almost translucent grown, Jim looked down at his heaving body. Even overdue with a large baby boy, his ribs were still visible below his defined yet plump chest before they spread and disappeared as they reached the top of his belly which jutted out and away from the rest of his body. He had really kept in good shape over the rest of his body so it looked like he had swallowed a beach ball.
Jim changed positions to lay on his side, with one knee up in the air. The baby was descending, so he felt better with his legs apart, allowing the head to move deeper.
At9:00AM the contractions were right on top of each other and Jim decided he needed to buzz the nurse. She arrived 10 minutes later and quickly began examining Jim. The poor woman looked like she had been running around all night.
As she worked behind his belly, she explained that she had already delivered 10 babies that night, because doctors were busy delivering critical cases and there were now 25 men in the ward. Her hands moved over Jim’s belly applying pressure here and there as she felt for the baby's positioning.
Jim winced slightly as his stomach was sore to the touch due to the fact that it had been contracting for over 12 hours now. The nurse noticed Jim's discomfort and apologized as she found the baby's head which was now very low before doing a quick internal exam. She told Jim he was at 9CM and almost ready to push.
She asked how he was feeling, and Jim let her know how exhausted he felt. She let him know he was doing great and that he was really close to delivering. So close in fact that she’d be back in a few minutes with an orderly to help out with the birth.
Jim wasn’t excited about not delivering with a doctor, but he had been through this before, and things felt normal. On second thought, Jim almost felt a sense of pride knowing that he wouldn't need a doctor to deliver. Let his "old age" be damned! As he waited for the nurse's return, Jim continued to feel his son's head inching closer to his opening. He really thought he could feel himself being stretched one last centimeter.
As the baby moved down, it continued to squirm under the pressure of the contractions, so not only did Jim feel pressure pushing down on his gut, but also the baby struggling back. The urge to push came again and again it took all Jim's strength to not push as much as he felt he needed to. He just lay there moaning and groaning as he ran his hands over his big, bulging belly.
Finally the nurse returned with an orderly, a young, strapping, blonde haired, blue eyed one to be precise. At least he'd have some eye candy as he delivered, Jim thought!
The nurse performed a final check and announced to his relief that Jim was at 10CM and could start pushing. She got him into pushing position, feet in stirrups and let him know where he could hold on to the bed.
Jim was so happy to be at this stage, the orderly lifted up his gown exposing Jim's ripe belly. Jim looked down for one of the last times at the sweaty orb in front of him and realized that this would probably be the last time he would be pregnant, a thought he took in with bittersweet feelings.
Now that his belly was bare before him, Jim noticed how different it looked than it had all pregnancy: much lower and less round, now more of an oblong shape, like a watermelon as its sides continued to contract. It was also almost flat on the top as the baby had moved down so low since his labor had begun.
After a solid 30 minutes of pushing, Jim finally got to the point of the head crowning. He gasped for breath as the nurse and the hunky orderly screamed at him to continue to push.
The nurse pushed his legs further apart, and the orderly pressed his big hands on the top of Jim’s belly to help move the baby lower still. The orderly was pushing down so hard, he left finger prints on Jim belly when he let go between contractions.
Jim couldn’t have been happier when he finally felt his son's large head escape his body. The momentary celebration subsided as the child turned its shoulders inside Jim, causing him to yell out in pain. He suddenly remembered that the baby’s widest part was still to come.
Jim pushed and pushed for 20 more minutes but couldn't get the shoulders loose. Desperate for relief he told the nurse he needed more help.
The nurse called for the doctor who came remarkably fast. He quickly assessed Jim and the baby's condition and watched what happened as Jim pushed through two more contractions, trying with all the might he had left to free the rest of the body. The doctor told him that the baby was quite large and that he would need to reach up inside of Jim to pull the baby out under its arms. Jim simply nodded, grateful that the doctor was there to help end this ordeal.
Once again Jim screamed as the next contraction began and the doctor reached inside of him, stretching his opening wider than he thought possible with his hands. The doctor told Jim to breathe through this contraction and wait for the next one to push.
The sensation of having nearly the entirety of both the doctor's hands inside of him was nearly too much for Jim. His opening burned as the doctor continued to stretch it wide as they all waited for the next contraction, his hands, gently surrounding the big baby boy's head.
Finally it came and per the doctor's instruction, Jim pushed as hard as he could as the doctor pulled the baby gently by under his arms. With that final push, Jim's son was finally expelled from his body.
Relieved Jim fell back on to the bed, panting for breath. The doctor held the baby as the nurse clamped and cut the cord. When that was done, she and the doctor moved off with the baby to a nearby table where they proceeded to check and clean the baby.
Jim sighed with relief and finally let himself relax as he heard his son cry for the first time.
After allowing Jim to rest for a few minutes, the orderly returned to his side and began to massage Jim's still contracting belly to help get the afterbirth out. With his son out, Jim's belly looked like a deflated balloon and felt like it was full of jell-o as the orderly pressed into it. With one final contraction the afterbirth was expelled. Once it was out, the orderly promptly disposed of it before returning to wash Jim's opening and help him into a new gown.
When Jim was dressed and settled back in bed, the nurse brought over his son. Tears came to his eyes as Jim held him for the first time. The nurse told him he weighed in at 10 lb 8 oz and asked him what he was going to name him and he said, Jim Jr.
A few hours later, Jim still couldn't believe he had his new son here. He had called his girls and they were delighted to hear about their new little brother.
Just as Jim Sr. was about to take a nap, his phone vibrated. He picked it up and read a text from Steve, announcing that he had given birth to a healthy, beautiful, 10 lb 9 oz girl named Samantha and reminded Jim that he owed him a call. Jim replied back telling Steve about Jim Jr. and saying he would definitely call him soon.
The message sent and Jim lay back in bed ready for some much needed rest. Although he felt sore all over, he was also overwhelmingly happy with his life at the moment and went to sleep thinking nothing but wonderful thoughts.
