A Boy’s Story ENDING

I can say the past nine months has really been something, but I know that it was worth it. I am nervous since I can go into labor any day now. Lily and Aura have really been moving a lot over the past month. It was as if they were trying to escape or something. I never would have guessed that so much could happen in nine months. I sat in the living room rubbing my stomach as Jen sat next to me playing a video game. Jason was in his office working on I don’t know what; he never let me into that room. He said that one day he would let me see it.  Jen put her hand on my stomach and smiled at me. She laid on the couch and put her head on my lap. She began to sing. I smiled, “What are you doing Jen?”

“I am singing to Lily and Aura. They like when I sing, they always calm down when I sing.” She smiled as Jason sat down next to us. “Hi Jason. How are you feeling?” She sat up but kept her hand over my stomach. I was surprised when I noticed Jen was right, Lily and Aura did calm down when she sang to them. They were actually sleeping.

Jason smiled at her, “I am fine Jen.” He looked at me. “How are you and the twins doing? No problems?” I shook my head no. “Good, we don’t want anything to happen to them right Jen?” She smiled and began to make circles on my stomach with her finger.  Jason hugged me and kissed my cheek. I leaned against him and smiled.

I must have fallen asleep because I woke to find my body sprawled out on the couch and I heard giggling coming from one of the guest rooms. I stood up, walked to the door, and knocked. Jason opened the door and looked at me with surprise. “Hey Damien, what are you doing up?” He was acting like I caught him committing a crime or something. I knew something was going on and I wanted answers. “Jason what are you and Jen doing in the guest room? I could hear her giggling. Now please tell me what is going on before I get upset.” My hand was sitting over my stomach.

Jason just smiled and opened the door enough so he could get out without me seeing inside. “Jen is helping me redecorate it for my mom. I don’t want you in this room, it can b very dangerous with the things all over the floor and the smell from the paint. Please just stay out ok?” I looked suspiciously at him and then at the door. “I promise Damien, why don’t you go take a shower, we are supposed to go visit my mom tonight remember?”

“Yeah, I totally forgot. I guess I better go take my shower, but one of these days you better let me in t6hat room.” He nodded and kissed my cheek. I turned and headed for the bathroom. I stopped for a second as I felt a very strong kick from Lily and Aura. After they calmed I continued on my journey. I walked into the bathroom, closed the door, and turned on the shower. Sadly, baths were no longer an option until after Lily and Aura were born since I could not get in or out of the tub without assistance.

I started to undress when a sharp pain in my stomach made me stop short of pulling my shirt over my head. I then figured out that when I thought I felt them kick I was having my first contraction. I braced the sink to help me stand, the pain was excruciating. I yelled Jason’s name, he ran into the bathroom and saw me leaning over the sink with a pained expression.

He turned off the shower and pulled his phone out of his pocket. He called his mom while he rubbed my back in an attempt to calm me. I didn’t even pay attention to what he said as I tried to breathe for Lily and Aura’s sake. He led me into the living room and had me sit on the couch. “Just hold on Damien, mom is on her way, she is going to watch Jen while we are at the hospital.” I just nodded as he continued to rub my back.

Nancy showed up ten minutes later. Jason told her that Jen was in his office as he escorted me to the car with my overnight bag dangling off his shoulder. He helped me into the passenger seat and buckled my seatbelt as I tried to breathe my way through another contraction. He called ahead to the hospital to let them know we were coming. He also called Dr. Lynx to let her know that we were on our way to the hospital.

We arrived at the hospital 25 minutes later. The pain was starting to get unbearable. Whenever I had a contraction, I would grip the “Oh shit bar” above my door and squeeze it as hard as I could. My other hand was over my stomach in a protective manner. I was worried about my daughters, I was afraid something bad might happen. Once we got to the hospital and orderly met us at the door with a wheelchair. Jason and I were separated for five minutes as I was wheeled into my room and he parked the car.

Jason POV

I parked the car and ran into the hospital. I ran to the help desk and asked what room they were keeping Damien in. she told me he was on the third floor room 23. I tapped my foot as I waited for the elevator to reach my destination. The door opened and I ran out. I counted the numbers on the doors and halted when I got to number 23. I walked in and saw Damien lying on the bed in those stupid hospital gowns. His hand was over his stomach and he looked scared. I ran over to him, grabbed his other hand, and squeezed it gently.

Damien POV

I smiled at Jason as he squeezed my hand. I smiled till another contraction took over my body.  I squeezed his hand hard as the contraction slowly passed. I felt bad for squeezing his hand like that but I couldn’t help it, the pain was too much. And the stupid nurse said I could not have any pain medication because they had no idea how it would affect Lily, Aura and me. They said if I was a woman they would have given me some by now, but since I was the first male patient to have a baby in that hospital they didn’t want to risk it.

I knew one thing for sure; once this was over, I was going to sue them for something. Lily and Aura kept letting me know they was okay once a contraction ended by kicking me. I was just happy they were ok. It may hurt, but if it meant I got to hold my daughters I didn’t really care as long as Jason was there with me. Dr. Lynx showed up a few minutes later. She just smiled at me and encouraged me. She told me that everything would be ok. “Doc, are Lily and Aura ok? I mean are they going to get hurt through all this?” I said breathlessly. I looked at Jason as he rubbed my stomach.

“No, they shouldn’t get hurt. And if anything does happen, we can help them. Don’t worry Damien. You will be able to hold your daughters and take them home to meet your sister.” I nodded as another contraction ran through me. She checked on Lily and Aura as I had the contraction.

I had been in labor for six hours before Dr. Lynx told me it was time to push. They made Jason put on the stupid surgical outfit if he was going to stay in the room with me, and trust me he didn’t plan on going anywhere. As I put my feet in the stirrups, they told me what to expect. And I can tell you that scared me even more. I mean I knew how they were coming out, but I never really went into detail until now.

As I had another contraction, Dr. Lynx told me to push. I started to push and it felt like nothing was even happening. I pushed for half an hour before she even said I was making progress. Jason was blotting my brow with a wet cloth in between contractions. The only thing on my mind was holding my daughters.

I pushed for another half hour before I could feel the first baby’s head. I smiled for a second at Jason before a contraction took over my body again. I moaned as my body stretched to allow her entrance into the world. Dr. Lynx had me stop pushing so she could clean out my daughter’s nose and mouth. I was taking fast shallow breaths as I resisted the urge to push. She told me to push again, I screamed as her shoulders, and the rest of her little body emerged. My first daughter was born and she was crying loudly. I felt tears come to my eyes. I could not believe it. I watched as Dr. Lynx handed my daughter over to the nurses.

Dr. Lynx pulled my attention back to her as she said it was time to push out the second baby. I was not sure I could do it, I felt exhausted already. I started to push again as Jason looked between me and our daughter. I felt my second daughter slowly moving downward. I pushed harder and winced as her head emerged. Dr. Lynx got nervous, asked for a pair of surgical scissors, and made me stop pushing before she was even all the way out. She was saying that the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck tightly. I began to freak out; Dr. Lynx cut the cord from around her neck and had me push one last time delivering her completely.

I did not even noticed the pain as her shoulders came out.  I kept asking if my daughter was ok but no one answered me. I could not even see her; the prenatal team had surrounded her. They were attempting to get her to breathe. They put an oxygen mask near her face and nothing happened. She was not breathing.

After five minutes of trying to get my second daughter to breathe, Dr. Lynx walked over to me with a sad look on her face. “Damien, I am sorry, but the second baby didn’t make it. It seems the cord wrapped around her neck and strangled her.”

I started to cry and Jason hugged me. “I want to see her.” I said through my tears. Dr. Lynx nodded and walked over to the table she was lying on, picked her up, carried her over, and handed her to me. My heart climbed into my throat when I held her. I looked up at Dr.  Lynx and the prenatal staff. “Leave us.” My demand came out as a half yell. One of the nurses tried to protest and Catherine just shushed her and led the other nurses out before handing the other baby to Jason.

Jason looked at me with sadness in his eyes. We both were crying over the loss of our daughter. I hugged my daughter to my chest and cried harder. I already began to wonder how I was going to tell Jen about losing her. Jen really loved both babies. “I am so sorry sweetie. You should not have had to go this way.” I felt like it was somehow my fault. I was still cradling her to my chest when Jason put his arm around me. I began to cry on his shoulder. I stopped crying as I got this weird feeling on my chest. I pushed Jason away and looked down at my chest.

I was surprised. “Jason, go get Dr. Lynx now!” He didn’t even ask what was going on, he just ran out of the room with my other daughter. He came back a second later with her running behind him.

“Damien, what is wrong?” She asked as she ran in.

“She is alive.” Dr. Lynx walked over to the side of the bed and saw her little chest going up and down and she could hear my daughter feeding from me. “My daughter is alive.”

She put a stethoscope over the baby’s heart and looked surprised. “How is this possible? She had no heartbeat and wasn’t breathing. What happened?”

“I don’t know, one second I was holding her crying the next I felt her feeding from me.” I looked over at Jason who was smiling with our other daughter.

Jason POV

I stood by the doctor in amazement. How could the baby be alive when five minutes ago she was not breathing or responding? I was glad she was ok, but just as surprised that she was feeding off of Damien. I never would have guessed that this would be the outcome. A tear of joy streamed down my cheek as I watched Damien stop crying and watch our daughter.

I looked down at our other daughter who was asleep in my arms. She was oblivious to what had happened to her sister. She didn’t even notice the excitement in the room. She was more comfortable sleeping in my arms. I can’t believe that the little girl in my arms was one of the things that brought Damien and me together. I rocked her gently as I looked back at Damien and the other baby.

Damien POV

After our ordeal was over me, Lily, and Aura were moved into our own room. Jason called his mom and asked her to bring Jen to the hospital to meet her nieces. Nancy and Jen walked into my room 20 minutes later. Jason was sitting behind me on the bed. He helped Jen climb onto the bed; she sat in front of me. I gently laid Lily in her arms and Nancy held Aura. Lily opened her eyes for a second and then fell asleep in Jen’s arms. Aura just continued to sleep. I leaned against Jason as he hugged me.

“Damien?”

“Yeah Jen?” I looked at my little sister.

“Can they sleep in my room?” Jason, Nancy, and I began to laugh. Jen just looked at us as if asking ‘what did I do.’

“Jen, they need to sleep in their cribs in our room.” I said I played with her hair.

I looked at Nancy as Aura began to cry in her arms. I figured Aura was hungry, Nancy handed her to me and I held her close to my chest. She immediately latched on and began to drink greedily. I was still amazed at the feeling of my daughters feeding off me. Jen looked back at me with a smile. I had no idea what was running through her mind, but I am glad she was happy.

I dressed my daughters in matching purple dresses before setting them in their carriers. Jen helped me put on their shoes and socks. I put their cute white hats on their head. Jason was filling out the paperwork that would make me released from the hospital. I looked up when I heard giggling. I saw Jason standing in the doorway leaning on the door jam watching me. “How long have you been standing there?” he walked towards me with a smile. He hugged me and kissed my neck.

“Long enough to know I am a very lucky man with two beautiful daughters. And soon we will be married with two beautiful daughters. And we also have Jen and my mom.” I hugged him as we looked at our daughters sleeping peacefully in their carriers. I could not believe that only 2 days before they were still inside me kicking away. I sighed contently as I watched my daughters sleep.

When we got home, Jason finally showed me the nursery. It seems that ever since I moved in with him he was creating a nursery for Lily and Aura. He just never told me. Jen even helped him paint it on occasion. They had painted it lavender with white trim. I immediately recognized the rocking chair in the corner. It was the rocking chair mom used to use when she rocked Jen to sleep when she was a baby. I put Lily and Aura in their cribs and smiled. This moment was perfect, Jen walked into the room and leaned her head against my hip as she watched Lily and Aura sleep.

I never would have guessed that the past nine months of my life could be filled with such pain, joy, and happiness. But I did learn one thing from it all, life can change in an instant and we must remember to live moments as if they are our last. Sadly, I had to learn that lesson the hard way. But it was worth it.

Epilogue

Jason and I got married a few months after Lily and Aura were born. Jen was our flower girl; she looked so beautiful in her little purple dress. The one thing that had surprised me most was when Nancy offered to walk me down the aisle. We walked down the aisle with her holding my one hand and Lily sleeping in her other arm while I had Aura in my free arm. Once we got to Jason, I gave her Aura and she kissed my cheek before walking to her seat.

The ceremony was perfect until my daughters cried half way through Jason saying his vows. We both laughed as Nancy brought Lily and Aura to us. I took Lily as Jason took Aura; once we began to rock them, they calmed down. It seemed they wanted to be part of the ceremony. They fell asleep in our arms as the ceremony continued. Jason and I walked back down the aisle with our daughters in our arms. We had a honeymoon in Hawaii for 3 weeks. We had to take Lily and Aura with us since they hate to be separated from us and I refused to bottle-feed them.

Now you know my story. Four years have passed since then. I went back to high school when Lily and Aura were two. I needed to get my diploma and Jen was telling me that I had to get it. Jason would watch the twins while I was in school. Everyday when I came home they would tackle me to the floor in a fit of laughter. I graduated with a B+ average. Lily and Aura were trying to play with the tassel on my cap when Nancy took a picture of me and my daughters right after my graduation.
